In 1952, little Gorka and his parents finally move into their own apartment. The apartment is actually a double stall in the stables of a convent on the outskirts of Bugulma. The convent was converted into a prison, and the stalls of the adjacent stables were converted into apartments. Bugulma becomes a prototype of the big world for Gorka. Here he will grow up, make friends, fall in love, do stupid things and perform noble deeds. “Prison Territory” — that’s what the residents call this house — actually becomes a place for the child, and then a young adult, where he learns to be truly free.

This novel is a coming-of-age story against the backdrop of important events: Stalin’s death, the exposure of the personality cult, Gagarin’s flight into space, the sixties. This book amazingly combines the measured breath of great history, as in the novel “The Darkness Falls on the Old Steps,” and the charm of “boyish” romance, as in “The Word of a Boy.”
