Twelve-year-old Candelaria lives with her eccentric family on a remote mountain estate called Parruca. Her father is an artist. The entrance to their home is decorated with sculptures of whales he created.

But one day, her father leaves for an unknown destination and never returns. As vegetation methodically consumes the house, bizarre guests appear: a woman who is an expert on poisonous plants; an elderly man who suffers from paranoia and fears everything; and the author of a mysterious manuscript, who is on the verge of death.

Candelaria believes these people will help her find her father—where the whales sing. The search will reveal the many facets of life and demonstrate the vulnerability of people.

Echoing the works of Gabriel García Márquez, Juan Rulfo, and Gioconda Belli, the novel "Where the Whales Sing" continues the "new realism" movement, revealing new facets of Latin America.
