What is the new novel about? As always with Faulks, this is dense, imaginative, magical and musical prose, psychologically authentic and existentially honest. This is the life story of Robert Hendricks, a successful psychiatrist and writer. He is an unsympathetic person, a cynic (especially in his relationships with women). Gradually, we understand that not everything in Robert's life is as simple as he would like to show others. His father died in the First World War, he himself is a veteran of the Second, and he is haunted by strange and dark obsessions - either his own repressed memories, or his father's experience. One day, Robert receives an invitation from another psychiatrist, the elderly Alexandre Pereira, to visit him on a small island in the south of France. Pereira turns out to be a strange character with his own skeletons in the closet. From him, Robert finally learns about the circumstances of his father's death, and these conversations open up for him his own repressed past, and in it - a beautiful and tragic love story.
