The diaries of W. Klemperer during the Nazi dictatorship of 1933-1945 actually became chronicles of the Third Reich. This is an inside view of German society under Nazi rule. Philologist Victor Klemperer, a German Jew married to a German, endured all the hardships and humiliations of the regime, but escaped extermination. Day after day, Klemperer kept a diary, describing in detail all the events that happened to him and around him, which gradually plunged the entire Jewish population of Germany into an atmosphere of overwhelming fear and hopelessness: fear of the Gestapo, searches, starvation, bombing, fear of deportation, often leading people to voluntary death.
