In this short book (1942), Schmitt outlines to his twelve-year-old daughter his vision of world history as a dramatic struggle between the elements of land and sea, a clash between the biblical monsters Behemoth and Leviathan. This is the basis for the dramaturgy of a new historical narrative. At its center is the fateful event of a decisive collective choice in favor of one of the elements. This is evidenced by the planetary spatial revolution of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as the new "nomos"—the fundamental law of territorial appropriation, their division, and subsequent economic exploitation. Schmitt's narrative is not limited to tender nostalgia for the romantic exploits of brave seafarers in the spirit of Melville, but appeals to the present, for the choice once made by our predecessors is the choice we face today.
