This reference book is devoted to the history and evolution of firearms used by the Russian army and navy from 1700 to 1853. The timeframe covered is defined by the period of practical use of muzzle-loading systems for long- and short-barreled firearms, where the flintlock was the primary ignition element of the powder charge.
Compared to previously published publications on the history of Russian handguns, this reference book is the first to seamlessly cover the first 150 years of the armament of the Russian army and navy.
This reference book contains the maximum possible number of surviving artifacts related to firearms used by the Russian army, both domestically and internationally. A significant portion of the specimens presented have not previously been published. To maximize coverage, painstaking research was conducted to locate surviving authentic weapons held in the collections of leading Russian and international museums. In addition, the reference book features examples from private museums and collections in both Russia and Western Europe.
The scientific and theoretical portion of the reference book, including statistical data on the production and use of each weapon model presented in the publication, is supported by regulatory documents and primary sources from archival collections.
The reference book is intended not only for weapons specialists and historians conducting research related to general issues of Russian military history, but also for a broader audience, including modelers, reenactors, artists, and anyone interested in military history.
