"Wandering Through Camps and Monasteries" by writer and artist Pavel Pepperstein is a novel whose characters, set in a detective story, travel through places and communities—some quite real, some seemingly cocooned in their own reality. Here, the characters split into two, and by turning the page, you can find yourself in a separate phantasmagoric plot and be swept away by a living stream of words, a trainload of synonyms, language play, ironic parodies, unexpected digressions, and a mosaic of literary and cultural references. The novel even opens abruptly, in true Kharms style—with a fight with an old woman.
