Following the resounding success of her novel "The Ideal Nanny," the young French writer of Moroccan descent, Leïla Slimani, winner of the Prix Goncourt, has taken on a grand epic—a family saga in three volumes called "The Country of Others," based on true events. "Christmas Under the Cypresses" is the first book in this trilogy. The action takes place after World War II. Twenty-year-old Mathilde, a Frenchwoman from Alsace, falls head over heels in love with an officer in the colonial troops participating in the liberation of France in 1944. Without a moment's hesitation, she marries him and goes to live with him in Morocco. The intense desire to return to her homeland that arises soon after her arrival is forced to suppress: pregnant and penniless, she finds herself trapped by her subservient position in a country where a woman's life is constrained by the strict rules of Islam. Moreover, Morocco is in turmoil, with nationalist terrorist attacks following one after another. However, Mathilde is not one to give up. Despite disappointments, poverty, and humiliation, she desperately fights for her family and her love. The book earned Leïla Slimani the Grand Prix de Madame Figaro for Best Female Character.
