G.K. Lukomsky (1884–1952) was one of the most prominent figures in the architectural life of Russia during the Silver Age. In the magazines Apollon, Starye Gody, Zodchy, and Stolitsa i Usadba, the architectural critic and historian actively championed the preservation of ancient monuments, collaborating with various societies and museums.

The dilogy "Old Petersburg" and "Modern Petersburg" occupies a special place in G.K. Lukomsky's oeuvre. These art-historical essays rediscovered the distinctive beauty of Old Petersburg and reflected the fervor of the revival of classical traditions in new construction.

The first book of the dilogy is permeated with nostalgia for the fading beauty of the majestic capital. The author's attention is drawn not only to the ceremonial center but also to remote corners of the city with their inconspicuous buildings preserving the remnants of "stylish antiquity."
