The author of memoirs Hans Jacob Goebeler during the Second World War served as a second-class motorist on the German submarine U-505. With German meticulousness and accuracy, Goebeler made notes about the design of the submarine, about his service, about the life of the crew in the confined space of the submarine, about the performance of combat missions and everyday problems that the sailors had to solve. Lively, vividly and in detail, the author describes the campaigns in the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea, talks about his comrades and gives an assessment to the commanders, noting with bitterness that sometimes the crew had to fight four enemies: the sea, the British, damage to equipment and their own officers. For ten years Hans Goebeler worked on his memoirs and completed them with the help of journalist John Vanzo, professor at Bainbridge University. The book is equipped with maps showing the path traveled by the submarine U-505.
