This edition contains all extant hagiographies (46 paired hagiographies and 4 separate biographies) from the pen of the great ancient Greek philosopher, historian and moralist Plutarch of Chaeronea (c. 46 - c. 127). "Comparative hagiographies" are biographies of the great heroes of antiquity, a kind of majestic "portrait gallery" of famous Greeks and Romans. Before Plutarch, historians of Greece and Rome, compiling a biography of a historical figure, sought to simply chronicle the main events of his life. Plutarch managed to avoid piling up incoherent stories by emphasizing an understanding of a person's way of thinking and character. Of particular importance is the comparativistic nature of this work, when the analysis of the way of thinking of the heroes is conducted through the prism of the peculiarities of the two great civilizations. "Comparative hagiographies" Plutarch is of great importance for the study of ancient history, as many works of writers from which he drew information have not reached us, and his works are the only information about many historical events, participants and witnesses. All texts are presented in the classic translation by the famous Russian philologist and translator of ancient literature V.A. Alekseev. For students of philosophy, political science, history, philology, and cultural studies and all those interested in the history of the Ancient World.
