Spartacus, a real historical figure, the leader of the largest slave rebellion in Ancient Rome, is a romantic hero in the novel by the Italian writer Raffaello Giovagnoli. He is devoid of flaws. A brave and skilled warrior, an outstanding commander whose talent is recognized even by his enemies; a selfless leader, ready to give his life for his beliefs; a loyal friend and caring brother, a man infinitely devoted to his beloved woman. Whether the famous gladiator was such in reality is unknown. But for Giovagnoli, who wrote the novel when Italy was waging a long-term struggle for independence, Spartacus became a vivid symbol of freedom. Symbolism as an artistic device was also chosen by the artist Savva Brodsky. The desperate struggle of an intelligent, noble, but disenfranchised man with a powerful state is conveyed in monumental images of heroes and plot compositions. And it is no coincidence that the main pictorial theme is the red Phrygian cap. In ancient times it was worn in Thrace, the birthplace of Spartacus, and since the time of the Great French Revolution it has been an indispensable attribute of European revolutionaries and freedom fighters.
