"Chronicle" Saxon Annalist - one of the largest in medieval Europe, both in volume and the period it covers - is considered one of the most authoritative sources on the history of the Middle Ages. Nothing is known about its author (except that he is a Saxon), but, according to researchers, when compiling his work, he used more than 100 independent chronicles of different authors, and the anonymous man himself received a respectful nickname Annalista. In terms of citability "Chronicle" Saxon Annalista knows no equal, and for a number of events is the main source. Translations of fragments of Annalist's "Chronicle" go from one chrestomathy on the history of the Middle Ages to another, but this "Chronicle" is published in full in Russian for the first time.
