"The truest poetry is fiction," asserted the English poet and playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616). "Fictional truth" of his creations turned out to be the nucleus, the center around which the vast Shakespearean universe was formed. In the sonnets William Shakespeare speaks mainly about love, which "knows no waning or decay" and has many guises. The erotic poem "Venus and Adonis" (1593; Shakespeare called it "the first-born of my imagination") shows the obsession with passion in the most earthly sense of the word: the goddess of love unsuccessfully seeks reciprocity from a mortal young man of dazzling beauty. The basis of the poem "Impoverished Lucretia" (1594) was the tragic story of a beautiful and virtuous Roman matron. Poetic experiments of the young Shakespeare and sonnets, with their wise brevity, will allow the modern reader to get a fuller picture of the work of the great English master.
