Americans consider the Solomon Islands campaign one of the decisive battles of the Pacific War. After the Battle of Midway, the Japanese continued their advance by inertia, but were stopped in the southern Solomon Islands. By the end of 1942, the enemy's clawed advance toward Australia was halted. The following year, the Americans went on the offensive. Heavy and bloody fighting continued. In July 1943, Japanese destroyers twice routed American squadrons, but the United States could afford to lose a pair of cruisers in exchange for a pair of Japanese destroyers.

Besides the naval and air strategy, this campaign is notable for being the only time in World War II that an enemy commander was killed. This book recounts Operation Vengeance, which resulted in the death of Admiral Yamamoto, commander of the Combined Fleet and mastermind of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
