The book is a reconstruction of the prehistory of the creation of the Georgian Democratic Republic, the history of its existence and Sovietization in 1921. The author examines the process of the territories of Transcaucasia leaving the collapsing Russian Empire and their movement towards acquiring international legal subjectivity, traces how they emerged from the most difficult world war and gradually left the Russian orbit, and how the Georgian elite changed the vector of its political activity from the demand for an autonomous status within Russia to a course for complete independence. The book also shows the development of the international policy of the Georgian Republic. The reconstruction of the events and processes that took place in Transcaucasia in the first years after the revolution in Russia is also important for understanding the prehistory of modern interethnic conflicts in Transcaucasia.
