The new collection of Genrikh Sapgir's works is an attempt not only to bring together most of what was written by the remarkable Russian poet and prose writer of the second half of the twentieth century, but also to create an integral image of this unique (even for this period of our literature) universal writer. He not only wrote with equal pleasure for adults and children, but also seemed to embody in the word the Larionov-Goncharov concept of "allness": a combination of all previously known ideas, manners, and techniques of modern writing, which is both radically avant-garde and extremely rooted in the deepest national tradition, and which is in constant provocative dialog with it. In the third volume of the collection, Eyes on the Back of the Head, Genrikh Sapgir appears as a direct heir to the avant-garde tradition, a poet who is no stranger to the most daring artistic experiments on the borders of verse and prose, verbal and visual, sound and meaning.
