"The Dog Years" - is the final novel of the "Danzig Trilogy" by Günter Grass. It comprehends the history of Germany in the first half and middle of the XX century: the pre-war period, the birth and flowering of Nazism, the war, the post-war years and the period of the German "economic miracle". The narrative in each part of the novel is conducted on behalf of one of the characters: Eddie Amsel - the "victim", Harry Liebenau - the "witness" and Walter Matern - the "perpetrator", each of whom perceives what is happening in his own way. The grotesque images, plots and allegories that permeate the narrative reflect the tragic paradoxical nature of the era. Satire becomes for Grass the only means capable of showing the madness of the society that nurtured and then denied the horror of the Third Reich.
