“The Word of Igor’s Regiment” is one of the oldest literary monuments of Ancient Russia. The archaic nature of the text does not allow to reliably establish either the period of its writing or even its author. Being a unique example of literary creativity of ancient times, the “Word” is remarkable for its lexical diversity, an abundance of means of artistic expression, the interweaving of folklore motifs and historical facts. This is an eventful, emotional work, the plot of which tells about the campaign of the army of the ancient Russian prince against the enemy Polovtsian tribes. And although Igor’s campaign was not crowned with success, his feat is still memorable. In this edition, the text "Words about Igor's regiment" is presented in three versions: it is the original Old Russian text and two of its translations into a more modern Russian language.
The first such translation was made by publishers under the direction of Count Alexei Ivanovich Musin-Pushkin (1744-1817) in 1800. Thanks to their painstaking work, “The Word of Igor’s Regiment” became widely known among the reading public of that time. In the future, translations of the "Word" during reissues were made repeatedly.
Among these many special praise was given to the translation of Nikolai Alekseevich Zabolotsky (1903-1958), an outstanding poet and translator, member of the Union of Writers of the USSR. Zabolotsky treated the text of the Word with trepidation, called it “the cathedral of our ancient glory”, a miracle that has survived several centuries later. Chukovsky noted that Zabolotsky in his translation managed to preserve the poetry and charm of the original.
The texts of the publication are decorated with original and colorful illustrations of three artists, miniaturists and graphic artists. Ivan Ivanovich Golikov (1886-1937) made drawings to the Old Russian text back in 1934 for the design of a gift edition. Then they were received with enthusiasm and were regarded as the pinnacle of the artist’s work. Now the first edition with Golikov’s illustrations is a bibliographic rarity. Ivan Gavrilovich Blinov (1872–1944) illustrated The Word of Igor’s Regiment a little later. For many years Blinov was engaged in the preservation and popularization of the cultural heritage of his people, and book illustration became his favorite craft. The book with drawings by Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova (1881-1962) was published in 1923 - it was a translation of the "Word" into German, therefore the illustrations turned out to be close to the European pictorial tradition. All artists worked in a different manner, which allows you to look at the work from different angles and appreciate the versatility of the ancient text.
