After liberation from Japanese occupation in 1945, a nationalist government seized power in Korea, which, with American support, began to exterminate the communist-minded part of the population. In 1948, troops landed on Jeju Island, where a young beauty named Chunja lived in the village of Lonely Utes. The girl herself, as well as her mother and grandmother, were haenyeo, divers who dived daily into the depths of the sea to harvest seaweed and shellfish for food and sale. But repression by the authorities is getting tougher. People are seized and killed on the slightest suspicion. Chunji's mother is an innocent victim, and her fiancé Suwol is nearly killed. The girl realizes that ahead of her awaits heavy trials. How to survive in this harsh world?
