Konstantin Mikhailovich Simonov (1915–1979) was a Soviet writer, war correspondent, and public figure. As a war correspondent, he traveled to all fronts of the Great Patriotic War, covering Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Poland, and Germany.

The poem "The Artilleryman's Son" (1941) tells the story of the friendship between two comrades, Deyev and Petrov. When one of them died, the other took command of the deceased's son, Lyonka Petrov, to whom Deyev became as attached as if he were his own son.

The poem was written by Simonov on a special assignment from the command, with the aim of raising the soldiers' morale. The plot is based on a true story the poet heard from an officer he knew.

"...I wrote 'The Artilleryman's Son' in one sitting, literally in a single day, in Arkhangelsk in November of 1941..."

The collection also includes the poems "The Battle on the Ice," "Suvorov," and the poet's war poetry.
