Representatives of two generations of a German family – five people – commit acts that are considered serious crimes by society and the state. From the point of view of these five, serious crimes are committed, with the connivance of the silent majority, by the state in its various forms (Kaiser's Germany, the Nazi Third Reich, the German Democratic Republic and the United Germany). From the point of view of the narrator of this story (about whom very little is known), the determining factor in the events described is the special quality inherent in these five: Self-Will... In the phantasmagorical polyphony that forms the fabric of this modernist novel, people argue with each other and with fate, talk to the absent, the dead and their own subconscious. All this happens in our time, in 2003-2006, but as the plot progresses, a picture of the historical development of Germany from the very beginning of the 20th century to the present day is gradually constructed.
