Viktor Shklovsky is a unique person in Russian culture. A writer and literary scholar, screenwriter and philologist, the creator of formalism and OPOYAZ, “all the wild flame, sharp philological wit” (Osip Mandelstam). But this book is about something else.
“The Shklovskys: Family Chronicles” is a biography of Viktor Shklovsky, his family and people from his inner circle against the backdrop of the catastrophic Russian history of the 20th century.
The book’s heroes: the writer’s father, the St. Petersburg teacher Boris Shklovsky, his uncle Isaak Shklovsky, a brilliant publicist known to all reading Russia under the name of Dioneo; tragically deceased brothers - Vladimir, Nikolai, Evgeny and sister Evgenia; friends Yuri Tynyanov, Boris Eikhenbaum, Roman Yakobson. The authors tell about Viktor Shklovsky's own family - his wife Vasilisa Shklovskaya-Kordi, his children Varvara and Nikita, about the friendship between Vasilisa and Nadezhda Mandelstam, about the young Viktor Shklovsky's love for Elsa Triolet and his later love for Serafima Suok.

This is a wonderful work, its value goes beyond the history of literature, embracing the history of the country. This is a saga about the destruction of Russian culture, about the death of the most valuable part of the nation, called the "Russian intelligentsia", whose descendants today are trying to recreate and preserve its appearance. At the same time, this is a saga about the possibility of a bright and strong personality to preserve itself "by means of loss": the rejection of principles, distortion and camouflage of ideas and discoveries. This required extraordinary courage and extraordinary self-respect, awareness of one's own exclusivity and value.
