For the first time told in full the story of the longest and best-funded scientific expedition of all time. More than 3,000 people took part in the huge 18th-century scientific voyage from St. Petersburg across Siberia to the coast of North America, known as the Second Kamchatka Expedition or the Great Northern Expedition. This project cost Peter the Great one-sixth of the annual income of his empire - scientists, artists, marshals, soldiers and laborers boarded the ships. The Great Northern Expedition was to demonstrate to Europeans the greatness and progressiveness of the Russian Empire and at the same time to expand its borders by joining North Asia and even part of America, lying beyond the Pacific Ocean. The scientific goals, albeit subordinated to state interests, were astonishing in their scale. However, the participants of the voyage themselves faced almost the most tragic and terrible fate in the history of navigation.
