The second book in Mark Uralsky's Sergei Yesenin dilogy is devoted to the poet's post-revolutionary life and work (1918–1925). Drawing on a large body of documentary material and the memoirs of his contemporaries, it illuminates Yesenin's literary activity as one of the founders and undisputed leader of Imagism—the last Russian avant-garde literary and artistic movement. Events from the poet's turbulent personal and public life are examined and discussed in detail: his love affairs, his Euro-American tour abroad, his relationships with friends, as well as with the supreme leaders of the Soviet Union, primarily with Yesenin's patron, Leon Trotsky, one of the leaders of the October Revolution. Special attention is devoted to an analysis of Yesenin's psychopathological personality, including an explanation of the causes of the excesses motivated by national intolerance that occurred in the poet's final years and led to accusations of anti-Semitism.
