"The Sentimental Memoirs of João Miramar" (1924) is the first Brazilian modernist novel, or, as the author Oswald de Andrade (1890–1954) dubbed it, "an invention," where style is defined by its absence. The text balances prose and poetry, autobiography and fiction, seriousness and comedy. The protagonist's travels, intrigues, and amusing anecdotes take place against the backdrop of major world events. De Andrade's language is dense and rich: João Miramar sometimes rumbles with an almost futuristic "zaum" (transcendental language), sometimes drones on with high-flown scholarly speeches. He is a carefree bon vivant, but through his eyes the reader sees Brazil from many sides: a wealthy Brazil, a Brazil of social and cultural inequality, a Brazil lost in the search for its own identity.
