Fact or truth? Rational thinking or revelation? The author invites us to answer the question of what we want to find in Dostoevsky's texts - and what his characters are destined to find. And if our choice is in favor of truth and revelation, Carol Apollonio offers us strategies for such a search. Combining the critical traditions of M. M. Bakhtin and R. L. Jackson, based respectively on detailed analysis of word and image, she offers us a fruitful new approach. The subject of her analysis is the spirit of St. Petersburg in the story "Poor People", the elemental force inherent in the figures of mothers in the novel "The Brothers Karamazov" (as well as the whole theme "Dostoevsky and Women"), and the issues of love and money in "The Gambler". Such a perspective allows the reader to penetrate deeper into the hidden truths contained in Dostoevsky's novels. Carol Apollonio is a professor at Duke University (USA), a specialist in Russian literature, and a translator from Russian and Japanese. Chair of the North American Dostoevsky Society. Author of books and articles on Russian literature.
