Svetlana Pavlova is a writer, winner of the annual Forbes "30 Under 30" list, and a graduate of the HSE Master's program in Literary Mastery. Her "short novel" "Hunger" was shortlisted for the Yasnaya Polyana Prize, and her new novel "Screenwriter" won the first prize at the Lyceum Prize for young writers and poets.
Aspiring screenwriter Zoya has never been tested for HIV. While waiting for her test, she makes a list—Yan, Andrey, Vitalik—and recalls romantic episodes from recent years. This book is about how today's 30-year-olds search for relationships, how these relationships are often not a panacea for problems, and also about life trapped in magical thinking, the stigma of HIV and the abstruse beliefs associated with it, finding one's passion, and the joy of true friendship.
Love, loveless love, happy underwear, unhappy dates, Americanos with cream, and the belief that tomorrow a miracle will happen—and the right one will come, while everything unnecessary will fall away and dissolve in the flow of time, Moscow's crooked streets, credits, and flickering frames. Sveta Pavlova is our Russian Bridget Jones or Carrie Bradshaw, who can see the good in even the most frightening things, and thereby inspire us. (Ksenia Burzhskaya, writer)
Sveta Pavlova has a finely tuned writer's vision and ear, and her primary authorial method is thoughtful observation. Her characters speak naturally—as they do in real life, and we can recognize familiar faces in each character. "Screenwriter" is a text where a difficult conversation about stigma meets an ironic reflection on modern relationships, friendship, and love. (Yulia Vronskaya, Development Director, Peredelkino Creative Center)
