1960s. During the summer season, hundreds of Native American families flock to the Maine blueberry fields to earn money picking berries. Six-year-old Joe, who works alongside everyone else, is tasked with looking after his little sister, Ruthie. One day, the boy briefly leaves the girl to sit on their favorite rock, and… Ruthie disappears without a trace. From that moment on, Joe will spend the rest of his life blaming himself for his sister's abduction and running from this guilt.

And not far from the berry fields, in a Boston suburb, a girl named Norma is growing up. She is the only and long-awaited child of a wealthy family—previously, infants were stillborn. Norma is wise beyond her years and loves her parents, but she is troubled by strange, vivid dreams of blue fields; missing childhood photographs… Her parents are hiding something from her, and it will take her decades to unravel the mystery.
