Girolamo Savonarola (1452–1498) came from a family of doctors, and it was expected that he would continue the dynasty's legacy. He indeed became a doctor—not of bodies, but of human souls. In an age of brutal wars, dishonest profit, and unprecedented depravity, his calls for mercy, kindness, mutual aid, and a better life resounded like an alarm bell across Italy, tormented by external and especially internal enemies. But… they remained empty words, and the speaker himself was silenced. Forever. Savonarola's life is a story of constant struggle, an unequal battle of one against all. A study of Savonarola's written legacy, especially his letters, many of which are translated for the first time for this edition, reveals not a mediocre fanatic, but a compassionate and highly educated man. It is enough to note his mention of the law of universal gravitation 200 years before Newton. The attempt to establish a theocracy (the rule of God) in Florence by proclaiming Jesus Christ as the Doge of the republic created by Savonarola has no precedent in human history.
