Fall 1943. Life for Italian Jews like Antonina Macin's family is becoming increasingly dangerous. When Nazi Germany occupies much of her beloved homeland and the threat of imprisonment and deportation hangs inescapably over her, Nina has only one chance of survival - leaving Venice and her parents to hide out in the countryside with a man she barely knows. Nico Gerardi was studying to be a priest until circumstances forced him to leave the seminary to run the family farm. As a man of high moral fiber, he simply couldn't stay away when the Nazis began threatening the lives of innocent people. To help Nina, he convinces her to pretend to be his fiancée. Now they both have to pretend to be a happy couple, so that no one can guess about the dangerous secret. But rural life is not easy for a city girl who dreams of becoming a doctor, and Niko's provincial neighbors are wary of this soft and educated, but completely unknown woman. And, worst of all, their distrust is shared by a local Nazi official, an acquaintance of Niko's from seminary who has a long-standing grudge against him. The more he learns about Nina, the more his suspicions grow, and with them his determination to take revenge....
