"On the Outskirts of the Great Empire" is one of V.S. Pikul's early novels. It is a panoramic narrative of life in a provincial Russian town in the fictional, yet recognizably familiar, Uren Governorate at the beginning of the 20th century. The work is written in the satirical spirit of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin, one of Valentin Savvich's favorite authors. The concept for the novel and the image of the protagonist, Prince Sergei Yakovlevich Myshetsky, arose from the author's extensive and meticulous study of the archival documents of the State Duma. The publication includes a large number of illustrations from V.S. Pikul's unique archive.
