"The History of the Polotsk Land to the End of the 14th Century," that is, until the first years of the principality's final incorporation into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1392, was the first major work by historian and archaeologist Professor Vasily Efimovich Danilevich (1872–1936). It is also one of the most important books in the history of Russian scholarship devoted to the past of the western lands of Ancient Rus'. Despite the paucity of sources and the underdeveloped methods of studying material culture at the time, the author endeavored to provide a detailed description of the origin, rise, and subsequent decline of the Principality of Polotsk—the first known state entity on the territory of what is now the Republic of Belarus. He was the first to systematically and critically examine all sources available at the end of the 19th century, reconstructing and presenting a picture of the past of one of the western outposts of Ancient Rus'. It is no coincidence that this budding historian's research was highly praised, and the author was awarded a medal. The book is now available in modern spelling.
