The Breton tales of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table and the search for the Holy Grail and the French chivalric novels created on their basis are almost unfamiliar to Russian readers, although they are much older, more complete and diverse than the English version of the Arthuriana known to us. The translation is based on the edition by Prof. P. Paris, a famous medievist of the XIX century, keeper of the manuscripts department of the French National Library: "The Romances of the Round Table, translated into modern language by Polen Paris and accompanied by studies of the origin and peculiarities of these great works".
The book includes four works that clearly show how the genre of the secular novel gradually grows out of the biblical apocrypha. This is a prose translation of Robert de Boron's novel "Joseph of Arimathea" (late XII century.), an even earlier legend "The Discovery of the Book of the Grail", the novel "Holy Grail" (one of the first examples of European "framed story") and quite a classic chivalric novel "King Arthur". The publication is intended for a wide range of readers interested in the history of literature, religion and European culture.
