The London suburb of Croydon, 1964. Helen Hansford is unmarried and in her thirties. Much to the dismay of her middle-class parents, she works as an art therapist at Westbury Park psychiatric hospital and begins a torrid affair with her colleague Gil, a dynamic but married doctor. One spring day, they receive a tip-off from the police. A 37-year-old man named William Tapping, with a waist-length beard, has been discovered in a Victorian house a few miles outside of town. He doesn't speak. He lives there with his elderly aunt, who is taken to the hospital, where she soon dies. No one knows why William has been locked away for decades, unseen by his neighbors. Helen begins working with William and realizes that he is not only sane but also a talented artist. However, as she tries to unravel the mystery of this strange man, her own carefully constructed life crumbles, opening up new horizons for her.
