The book is dedicated to Kotovsky's activities during the Bessarabian period, which has so far been covered more by legends than by documents. At the beginning, the myth of Kotovsky is examined in its main features: his build, his conformity to the mythological template of a hero, his place among the "noble robbers" in history and literature. The second part is dedicated to the people with whom Kotovsky dealt during that period: his comrades, opponents and victims. Finally, the main part of the book reconstructs the history of Kotovsky's actions in Bessarabia and Odessa before 1917 - as reflected in police and court documents. The text is based on materials from the Kishinev archives, many of which are being introduced into scientific circulation for the first time and are currently being prepared for publication. For historians of Moldova in the period 1812-1917, Russia in the early 20th century, researchers of modern mythology, as well as a wide range of readers.
