"Reemke" (the Khmer version of the ancient Indian epic "Ramayana"), despite the borrowed plot, is an original work and is rightfully considered the pinnacle of Khmer poetry, a literary monument that reflects the religious and aesthetic views and national traditions of Cambodia.
The poetic text, presumably dating back to the 16th-17th centuries (Part 1) and the 18th century (Part 2), was intended for a traditional Khmer theatrical performance, where poems are recited or sung accompanied by musical instruments. The first full translation of the monument into Russian, made by the famous Russian Khmerist I.N. Shmeleva, is preceded by an introductory article introducing the reader to the history of the text and its study, accompanied by notes and appendices.
The publication is addressed to specialists - orientalists and philologists, as well as a wide range of readers interested in the literature and culture of Southeast Asia, the history of the spread of ancient Indian epic in these countries.
