In 1931-1933, the German philologist-novelist, medievalist, and translator Ernst Robert Kurzius temporarily withdrew from pure science in search of a humanist philosophical alternative to the prevailing totalitarian ideas. Taking stock of social and political outcomes in anticipation of tragic times prompted Kurzius to rethink a number of cultural and historical phenomena that invariably accompanied his project of a global Europe.
In 1932 he published a kind of political manifesto - the book "The German Spirit in Danger", where for the first time he proposed the concept of "new humanism", designed, according to it, to preserve the integrity of the national spirit in the face of impending disaster and based on the enlightened Middle Ages and the idea of a pan-European community in contrast to the revolutionary nationalism of the era. By critically describing the socio-political, cultural, and educational trends in the Germany of his time, Curtius became an enemy of his own country, busy at the time revising history and inventing collectively experienced forms of greatness. The edition is prefaced by a detailed foreword by D. Kolchigin, which also includes several articles by Curtius and his critics.
