Autumn 1192. Having left Jerusalem in the hands of the Saracens and agreed on the terms of a peace treaty with their leader Saladin, Richard the Lionheart is finally free to return to his troubled kingdom. He is accompanied by his loyal knight Ferdia, also known as Rufus. Having been shipwrecked off the coast of Italy, the king and a small detachment are forced to undertake a desperate journey through lands under the rule of enemies. It will be a long time before Richard sees his homeland again - he will be captured, and while he waits for a ransom that will be ruinous for the English treasury, internecine wars will flare up in his lands.
