Here are three brilliant comedies in which Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852) exposes the weaknesses of society with caustic humor.

It is believed that the plot of the play "The Government Inspector" was suggested to the writer by A.S. Pushkin. A stranger appears in a remote town, whom local officials take for a formidable inspector from St. Petersburg. Panic is instantaneous: bribes are hidden, the streets are swept, faces smile until their cheekbones hurt. But the "inspector" turns out to be an ordinary rogue - Khlestakov, who is not averse to enjoying unexpected power and attention.

"Marriage" is an ironic story about the fear of marriage. The official Podkolesin hesitates between the dream of family comfort and the fear of losing his freedom. The matchmaker, friends and bride - everything seems to push him to the decisive step. But will it be taken?

In "The Gamblers" everything revolves around deception, gambling and psychological play. Card sharper Ikharev, wanting to get rich, himself ends up in the trap of provincial swindlers.
