Hans Henny Jann's (1894-1959) trilogy, "River Without Shores," took fifteen years to complete and became a masterpiece of 20th-century world literature. The second volume, "Testimony...," written by the lover of a missing girl twenty-five years later, becomes an opportunity to reflect on and justify his life: the life of a man who embarked on an adventurous journey along the coasts of Latin America and Africa, found a second home in a remote corner of Norway, and, in adulthood, managed to become a world-renowned composer.
"Testimony..." is the diary of Gustav Anias Horn, in which he reconstructs the events that took place after a shipwreck. A witness to the sinking of a wooden ship who comes to Horn turns out to be an impostor, and his relationship with his werewolf double turns into a deadly duel, forcing Horn to delve into the depths of his own psyche and comprehend layers of consciousness dating back to different eras. The novel, rich in references to ancient myths, can be read as a parable about the final frontiers of human personality and the role art plays in our lives.
