The book is based on the memoirs of Infantry General Leonid Konstantinovich Artamonov (1859-1932), a man who lived an eventful and interesting life that coincided with one of the turning points in Russian history. The materials of the book serve as an illustration of the so-called "Great Game" that unfolded with particular force in the military-political structures of the Russian and British empires in the second half of the 19th century. Artamonov's memoirs reflect the peculiarities of the service and life of the army, border, Cossack troops, and the customs service on the outskirts of the empire, and show how the staff and intelligence activities of General Staff officers were organized. The book is intended for those interested in military history, military pedagogy and psychology, studying the history of military intelligence, for political scientists, sociologists and educators, as well as for all intelligent people reflecting on the fate of Russia.
