The Izyum-Barwenka operation of July 1943 is usually considered a failure of the Red Army. However, in the shadows usually remains the fact that although the troops of the South-Western Front failed to break through the Wehrmacht defenses, but the offensive actions and serious losses of the enemy became one of the reasons why the German command stopped the operation "Citadel".
The author of this book, on the basis of archival documents, offers an innovative hypothesis - the events on the southern phase of the Kursk Bulge to repel the German tank attack within the framework of "Citadel" were only part of the overall plan of the Soviet command, whose main task was to stop the advance of Army Group "South" to Kursk and, "pulling" on themselves, to tie up all the tank reserves of the Nazis in the southern section of the Soviet-German front. These decisive actions were to help the South-Western and Southern Fronts to fulfill the main plan of the VGK Stavka - to liberate the Donbass. Adolf Hitler appears in an unusual perspective on the pages of this book - the "mad Fuhrer" was more astute than the "invincible" Field Marshal Erich von Manstein and not only held Donbass, but also, correctly feeling the pulse of the battle, without exaggeration saved the 6th Field Army of the new formation from another terrible defeat, comparable in scale to Stalingrad.
