Abel Posse (1934–2023) was an Argentine writer and diplomat. His novels have been translated into sixteen languages. His novel "The Dogs of Paradise" (1983) was awarded Latin America's highest literary award, the R. Gallegos Prize.

This is the story of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America, but Posse approaches these distant events through the prism of magical realism, introducing poetic, fantastical, and surreal elements into the text, a play of masks that reveal the faces of iconic figures from different eras. The author rejects the notorious "reconstruction of events," considering more important what never makes it into official documents and chronicles, serving as the true driving force behind great deeds.

This is the role played in the novel by two brilliant youths united by great love – the Catholic Kings Ferdinand and Isabella, without whose help Christopher Columbus, a Jew and a Catholic, a hero and a slave trader, a prophet and a greedy gold seeker, who embodied all the contradictions inherent in Western man, would not have discovered new lands.
