"Journey to Weimar" (1923) is a documentary essay by Marietta Shaginian (1888–1982) about her eight-day summer pilgrimage to Goethe sites on the eve of World War I. The young writer walks through the streets and picturesque environs of Heidelberg, Worms, Frankfurt, and Weimar, describing her impressions in detail: from the sounds of a moving train and the faces of passersby to the ancient towers of Worms Cathedral and the engravings in Goethe's House. Traveling through the birthplaces of German culture, recalling the works of Schiller and Hoffmann, Beethoven and Wagner, the author reflects on the German mentality, the women's question, the peasantry, and Russia's place in European history. Despite the panegyric tone, which led to the rejection of publication during the war years, Shaginyan captured an old culture standing on the brink of global catastrophe, thereby anticipating, as she notes in the preface, Spengler's ideas from his famous work "The Decline of the West."
