Sarat Chandra Das (1849–1917), a Brahmin, gained fame for his two journeys to Tibet in 1879 and 1881–82. He was a British spy who collected information on the Russians, Chinese, and Tibetans during the Great Game. He was a scholar of Tibetan language and culture, compiler of the Comprehensive Tibetan-English Dictionary, and recipient of the Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire, among other honorary awards and titles. The Russian translation of this captivating account of his second journey to Tibet has been out of print since 1904, but is now finally available in modern orthography. All the original illustrations are preserved. Discover the harsh world of this mysterious high-altitude country with this Indian traveler!
