This volume of the series "Great Travelers" presents to modern readers the legacy of one of the most famous navigators of the Age of Enlightenment - Jean François de Galo, Comte de La Perouse (1741-1788). The publication is based on the first Russian translation of the great traveler's diaries.
The itinerary of the round-the-world voyage prescribed by Louis XVI to Jean François de La Perouse, an officer of the Royal Navy, exceeded everything that had been known up to that time: France was going to surpass at once all the achievements of Great Britain in geographical discoveries of unexplored lands. In his farewell to La Perouse, the King said: "I will consider it the happiest outcome of the expedition if it ends without loss of life." Unfortunately, Louis' wish did not come true. The expedition disappeared in March 1788: "La Perouse disappeared without a trace in the boundless blue ocean, - wrote the famous philosopher Thomas Carlyle, - and only a mournful mysterious shadow of him does not leave our minds and hearts ..." Only 40 years later in the western Pacific Ocean were found the first traces of the missing La Perouse and his companions ... But it was not a vain sacrifice. The lost expedition managed to make a number of geographical discoveries and in general fulfilled its task: made an invaluable contribution to the advancement of the greatest goal always facing mankind - to the knowledge of the world.... This book - includes a new and most complete translation into Russian of the diary of the famous traveler, as well as not previously published in Russian biographical book of the famous historian Ernest Scott "Life of La Perouse". Like all editions of the series, the book is beautifully designed and filled with a significant number of color and black-and-white illustrations.
