This book is the latest brainchild of the outstanding art historian Arkady Viktorovich Ippolitov: a commented edition of the Italian diaries of the famous Marquis de Sade. The name of the author, like the name of the commentator, needs no introduction. However, here the notorious writer shows himself from an unexpected side as an erudite, researcher, expert in history and connoisseur of art.
His "Journey through Italy" is a real author's guide. It was written two and a half centuries ago, but so vividly and at the same time thoughtfully, with such interest and love, that even today it can serve an inquisitive traveler well.
The Marquis's travel notes are provided with a fascinating historical, art and literary commentary, which not only reveals the dark places of the text, but also gives anyone the opportunity to feel like a companion of a brilliant aristocrat, making a "grand tour" of the most beautiful places of the Apennine Peninsula: Florence, Rome, Naples and its environs. Unfortunately, Arkady Ippolitov did not have time to fully implement his plan: he is the author of only a part of the commentary. The work he began was completed by Anastasia Golubtsova, an Italian philologist, senior research fellow at the A.M. Gorky Institute of World Literature.
