Three young Muscovites come to a remote village in the Volga region on a hack job: they have to remove a dying fresco from the wall of an abandoned church. On the fresco - heretical image of St. Christopher with the head of a dog. It turns out that the village in the old days was a schismatic hermitage, and the hackwork is the experience of mysterious dengerologists, "sappers" of world culture. And in the gloom of peat fires, the lost historical memory gives birth to the creepy Psoglavets - either the demon of the schismatics or the god of the camp guards. If you like, it's a genre novel, a werewolf horror story. If you like, it's new country prose. If anything, it's a web-surfing stylization of the Russian schism. But overall, Psoglavtsy is a story about the invisible boundaries of culture and the guardians of those boundaries. Any society has a certain circle of beliefs, and society does not allow a person to leave this circle, and if a person dares to go beyond the sacred boundary, then the monsters rush after him.
