Psychology of being

The book by the American psychologist Abraham Maslow, one of the seminal figures in twentieth-century psychology, presented an alternative to the two major trends in psychology that existed at the time of its first publication: behaviorism and Freudian psychoanalysis. Maslow, who began his research career as a pupil of the behaviorist approach, perceived the influence of the so-called "third force". This alternative movement included followers of neo-Freudianism, ethnopsychology and Gestalt psychology, among others. Starting from the ideas developed by the "third force" associates, Maslow attempted to build a new perspective on the study of human nature, which later became widely recognized and known as the humanistic approach in psychology.
